Sen. John Thune (R-SD): “Happy to have been at the @WhiteHouse for today`s event, during which the first phase trade agreement with China became official. That`s good progress. If we consider the whole of the European Union as an entity (as is the case with trade), China`s trade influence extends to all of Asia, Africa, Europe and parts of South America. There is also the fact that the United States imports more from China than elsewhere. Sen. James Lankford (R-OK): “Congratulations to @RealDonaldTrump for concluding the Phase One agreement with China. Each president has tried to bring China to more equity in its trade – more ag sales, more intellectual property protection, and first step toward a more open market. Eric Wilkey, President of the National Grain and Feed Association: “The National Grain and Feed Association (NGFA) praises President Trump and his government for the successful conclusion and signing of a Phase One trade agreement with the People`s Republic of China. All these obstacles and complications lead to political failure. Regardless of who is president, the United States must get China to liberalize its tariffs, reduce non-tariff barriers, and streamline its subsidies and other practices that distort economic incentives.

In response to Trump`s trade war, China imposed additional tariffs on more than 50 percent of U.S. exports in 2018 and 2019. It is mysterious that the legal text of the first phase of the agreement did not remove, reduce or even mention the word “tariffs,” and it did little to address the major trade problems that the United States has with China. Instead, the Trump administration has provided an excellent case study on why simple purchase commitments can`t go around. Chinese exports to the world fell by 2.7% in April. Meanwhile, exports to the United States fell 13.2% in an escalating trade dispute with Washington. In the first four months of the year, Chinese exports grew by only 0.2% over the year. Manufacturing is expected to take another blow, as companies in Hong Kong and Taiwan withdraw some of their production from China to avoid U.S. tariffs.
